Our Top Ingredients For Treating Acne.
In our lab, we compound facial creams and treatments for all types of acne – cystic acne, hormonal acne, adult acne. Our Naturopathic Doctors work closely with our pharmacy team to formulate custom creams specifically for their patient’s needs. Below are our favourite ingredients to use when compounding acne treatments.
Salicylic Acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (or BHA) which is one of the most effective ingredients for treating and preventing acne. Salicylic acid tackles breakouts by dissolving access buildup deep within the pore, and removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. Not only does this help to prevent congestion, it also helps to clean out blackheads. Salicylic Acid is also an anti-inflammatory, so it helps to reduce redness.
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)
Niacinamide is a research backed ingredient that has proved to be an excellent treatment for moderate acne. It is anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, sebum reducing and lightening. Not only does it help to reduce acne, it had also been found to decrease hyperpigmentation (acne scars) when used consistently over a period of 4 weeks. The biggest plus, it’s a lot gentler on sensitive acne-prone skin than most other active ingredients.
Tea Tree Essential Oil
Tea tree essential oil is made from the leaves of the Australian tree of the same name. It has both anti-bacterial and antimicrobial properties – helping to treat acne by lowering levels of acne-causing bacteria on the skin. Tea tree oil is also a strong anti-inflammatory with one study finding that it could inhibit localized inflammatory responses on the skin by 50% after 40 hours of exposure.
Azelaic Acid (Potassium azelaoyl diglycinate)
Azelaic acid is anti-inflammatory, skin lightening and has anti-bacterial effects. Potassium azelaoyl diglycinate is a water soluble derivative of Azelaic acid. It’s more gentle on the skin, but still contains all the same anti-bacterial properties that help with acne. It also has hydrating abilities and significant sebum normalizing activity (I.e. it helps to control the skin’s oil production). It has been found to be especially effective for treating adult acne.
