Methylcobalamin is an active, coenzyme form of vitamin B12 and helps to prevent vitamin B12 deficiency. Cyanocobalamin, the most common form of supplemental B12, must be converted first into hydroxocobalamin, and then into adenosylcobalamin, which is finally converted into methylcobalamin. Since cyanocobalamin has to undergo this extensive conversion process, supplementation with methylcobalamin is preferable, and it is also the specific form of B12 shown to support the brain and nervous system.
